Located in Brecon, the Former Magistrates Court was declared surplus to requirements by HM Courts & Tribunal Service in early 2016. The property had remained empty and unoccupied since this date.

Working in partnership with our Client Melin Homes, the existing building will be converted into apartments which, along with two new-build “bookend” extensions, will create 21 new dwellings to add to Melin’s social housing stock on completion.

Located within the Brecon Beacons National Park, careful attention has been required to ensure the completed development was aesthetically sympathetic to the area and that it reinforced the site’s ecological merits, this included the addition of wall and roof mounted bat boxes.

In terms of the layout, as a former court building the property had some unique design challenges to be addressed, not least remodelling the former high security cell block. However, despite the constraints of the former building, every effort was made at the design stage to ensure the final dwellings were fully DQR compliant as per any purpose-built dwelling.

We are currently recruiting for an apprentice to work with us on this project. See Jobs & Careers for further details.
